In the current phase, construction, building and contracting sector is playing a major economic role as one of the principal basis of development due to its effective contribution in infrastructure completion such as utilities and housing.

Construction and building sector has an important economic influence. It affects more than 90 industries such as cement, iron, plaster, painting, ceramics and wooden industries...etc. This sector is also considered one of major sectors that attracts manpower. About 8% of total manpower in Egypt is working in this field.

The National company for construction and development (Egyptian holding stock co.),working under law 203 of year 1991, is considered one of the biggest companies in the field of construction and building in Egypt.  NCCD started its activities since 1960 under different names according to the legal regulations controlling its frame of work. Finally, it ended as one of Ministry of Investment companies to adequate the new economic policy that depends on the market mechanism,  the quality assurance and the qualified competition.

NCCD has 20 companies categorized as follows : 9 contracting companies, 1 Foundation company, 1 company for Designs and Engineering consultations, 3 housing companies, 2 electric companies, 3 Irrigation and Drainage companies, 1 company for Agriculture projects management, this after selling 10 companies (6 contracting companies + 2 housing companies + 2 electric contracting companies). The total activity revenue during the fiscal year 2008/2009 is 9.772 milliard pound, which realized a surplus of 675 million pound, recording 6.9% of the activity revenue. NCCD and its affiliated companies have also shares in some joint ventures.
